Threads by Meta: What It Is and How It Works

A brief but comprehensive look at Threads – a text-focused platform created by the Instagram team, launched in the summer of 2023.
What is Threads and who is it for?

Basic idea and origin

Threads is a social network within the Meta ecosystem, introduced by the Instagram team in July 2023. It is primarily a space for text, similar in logic to Twitter (now X), but allowing for quick sharing of photos, GIFs, and videos. In Mark Zuckerberg’s vision, Threads is meant to function as a „friendly town square”: less conflict, more everyday conversations, and constructive discussions. This platform was created as a modern alternative to microblogging, prioritizing clear, respectful dialogue and community engagement.

Connection to Instagram and account management

How to join and what is inherited

Threads is closely tied to your Instagram identity: you log in through Instagram, and your account inherits your username, profile picture, and follower circle. This makes it easy to transfer your audience to the new network – you can instantly follow the same people. Privacy settings are aligned with Instagram: if your account there is private, it will also be private on Threads. Initially, account deletion was linked, but later it was separated – now you can delete your Threads account without removing your Instagram. For users under 16, the default setting is a private profile.
As of December 2023, Threads is also available in Europe (including Lithuania). EU users can view public content without an Instagram account („Use without a profile” mode – reading, searching, copying links), but creating posts, commenting, or reacting without logging in through Instagram is not allowed. Most users still choose to connect via Instagram, so they are subject to Meta’s policies and common community rules.

Main features of Threads

What can be done on the platform

The text limit for a single post is up to 500 characters; starting in the fall of 2025, an additional text attachment of up to 10,000 characters (a sort of mini-article) can be added after the post. You can attach up to 20 photos and/or videos in one carousel post; the duration of a single video can be up to 5 minutes. Links automatically generate preview snippets, and images can have alternative text (ALT) set. Polls are available (lasting up to 24 hours, with up to 4 response options; results are shown after voting) and integrated GIF search allows for quick embedding of animations.
Reactions to other posts are standard: „like,” comment, repost (similar to retweet). There are two feed modes: „For You” (an algorithmic mix of followed accounts and recommendations based on your behavior) and „Following” (chronologically showing only posts from accounts you follow). The topics and trends sections help discover the most popular discussions based on hashtags and themes. The platform offers automatic translations based on language settings. Security tools allow you to block accounts, filter words and comments, and limit who can reply or mention you. Integration with Instagram allows for instant sharing of Threads posts to Stories or other networks, and Meta Verified status (blue badge) is synchronized. Starting in 2025, ads will gradually be introduced – they will be marked with a „Sponsored” label.

Interface and content display

App design and algorithms

The interface resembles Instagram: at the bottom is the main navigation (home, search, notifications, profile), and at the top is the writing button. On the main page, you can switch between „For You” and „Following” feeds using a slider. The search feature finds people, hashtags, topics, and lists of other accounts. Later, the search was expanded – profile filters, date range options, and smarter recommendations were introduced. The recommendation system analyzes various signals – from topic activity and interactions to account behavior – and selects visible content accordingly. „Trending topics” allow you to quickly see the most popular discussions, while a separate fediverse feed and search help discover content from Mastodon or other ActivityPub networks.
Long-awaited features are being rolled out in phases: by the end of 2024 – significantly improved search, in the summer of 2025 – direct messaging (DM), and in the fall of 2025 – group chats. Further improvements are promised: finer filtering, more accurate recommendations, detailed analytics for creators and businesses, and broader API capabilities.

How Threads compares to other networks

Comparison with X, Mastodon, and BlueSky

Threads vs. Twitter (X)

X is a standalone platform with a separate account (no need to have Instagram). The traditional character limit is 280 (larger capacity features are for paid accounts), while Threads allows up to 500 characters and, if needed, an additional 10,000 character text attachment. X offers very detailed search and trending panels, has advertising and paid verification; Threads will also gradually show ads starting in 2025 and deeply integrates into the Meta/Instagram ecosystem.

Mastodon

Mastodon is a decentralized system operating under ActivityPub. Users connect through different servers (instances), each with its own rules, resulting in varied moderation. The platform collects minimal data and does not use advertising, so the level of privacy is higher, but the scale and range of features are more modest. Threads is a centralized Meta service with unified community guidelines, and its user growth is much faster; it also implements fediverse connections to balance openness with mass accessibility.

BlueSky

BlueSky is a platform aiming for decentralization under the AT protocol. It often operated on an invitation basis, so the community remained smaller for a long time. Its functionality resembles Twitter (feeds, hashtags, discovery algorithms), data collection is minimal, and there are no ads. Threads, on the other hand, utilizes a broad Meta database and offers deeper personalization, but this raises more privacy concerns; nevertheless, the fediverse direction indicates a desire to open up.

Growth worldwide and in Lithuania

Launch boom, decline, and maturity

Threads debuted on July 5, 2023, and immediately attracted massive attention – within hours it garnered 10 million registrations, and within a few days, about 100 million. The success was aided by the „import” of Instagram’s audience and changes happening on X at the time, prompting part of the community to seek alternatives.
After the initial surge, activity declined – in the early period, important features were missing (DM, expanded search, hashtag system). Later, with the addition of messaging, group chats, a web version, topic tracking, and improved search, the decline was halted. By spring 2025, Meta announced over 350 million monthly active users (MAU), and overall dynamics showed steady growth.
In Lithuania, Threads appeared alongside the EU – in December 2023. Initial engagement was more cautious than in larger markets: exact local numbers are scarce, but media noted a reserved curiosity. Some influencers and editorial teams transitioned to the platform, actively experimenting with formats (short text messages, photo carousels, polls). Business challenges include a relatively young audience, developing user habits, and recently activated advertising tools; however, integration with Instagram and growing scale mean that Threads is increasingly appearing in marketing plans.

Privacy and data usage

What Threads collects and how it affects you

Threads’ privacy and data handling align with Instagram/Facebook practices. The app can collect a wide range of information: location, contacts, device data, browsing and search history, installed apps, purchases, and more. Compared to decentralized projects (Mastodon, BlueSky), the amount of data collected is larger, as the platform operates on personalization and advertising principles. In the EU market, due to regulations, additional choices and restrictions apply (e.g., reading without a profile, stricter consent practices). Security controls are similar to Instagram: blocking, word filters, control over reactions and mentions. Private messages in the Threads environment are not currently end-to-end encrypted, so for sensitive information, it is advisable to choose more secure channels.

User experiences: pros and cons

What users like and what they want more of

Many users appreciate Threads for its easy start through Instagram: no need for a new identity, friends’ posts are visible immediately. The interface is familiar, and the connections for comments and images are convenient, while automatic translations reduce language barriers. Users often note that the feed feels „lighter,” and the intensity of ads is still relatively low. Another advantage is that the platform is more associated with real identities – some people feel safer than on X.
The biggest criticism was directed at the early version – it lacked advanced search, a clear trends panel, and messaging; as a result, discovering new content was more difficult, and the feed felt more chaotic. Some users disliked the algorithmically suggested random posts from acquaintances. The most common requests include more chronological control, niche sub-communities, and tools for creators and businesses (planning, statistics, advertising formats), broader reactions, and easier import from other networks.

A look into the future

Openness to the fediverse and new features

Meta declares its intention to align Threads with ActivityPub so that the platform can interact with the open social internet (fediverse). In 2024-2025, trial integration steps were taken: public profiles, when enabled in a special mode, can share posts to Mastodon, Pleroma, and similar networks; a separate fediverse feed and search have been introduced. Currently, external user responses to Threads accounts are limited, but fuller compatibility is planned (following, replying, discussions from other servers) – while seeking a balance between openness and Meta’s moderation standards.
Additionally, Threads is evolving in a „traditional” direction: messaging and group chats are operational, video/audio formats are being improved, deeper analytical tools for creators and businesses are promised, API expansion, smoother topic tracking, and advertising integration. Whether the platform can reconcile user expectations (convenience, relevant news, community engagement) with openness and security requirements will determine its place alongside X, Mastodon, and BlueSky.
