Apple introduces the new MacBook Air with the M5 chip: The era of artificial intelligence for everyday computers
While the computer’s design remains unchanged, the internal updates mark a significant step forward,
especially in processing artificial intelligence (AI) tasks, memory architecture, and data storage. This update makes the world’s most popular laptop even more efficient while maintaining its slimness and energy efficiency.
The key innovation of the new MacBook Air is the next-generation M5 processor.
Built using advanced 3-nanometer technology, this System on a Chip (SoC) solution ensures a massive performance leap compared to previous generations.
- Processor (CPU): The M5 chip features a 10-core processor, including the fastest super cores designed by Apple, ensuring lightning-fast responses for complex tasks and processing large amounts of data.
- Graphics Card (GPU): With up to 10-core GPU system, it guarantees smooth graphics processing. The new graphics processor supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing, significantly enhancing 3D rendering, shadow accuracy, and gaming experience.
- Artificial Intelligence Solutions: Each GPU core now includes an integrated neural accelerator, and a separate 16-core neural engine allows for up to 4 times greater performance in AI tasks (compared to M4) and even up to 9.5 times greater performance compared to the older M1 model. This architecture greatly accelerates the performance of Large Language Models (LLM) directly on the device without sending data to the cloud.
Apple continues to enhance its unified memory concept,
which allows both the CPU and GPU to access the same data array without unnecessary duplication. According to research evaluating Apple Silicon architecture, the unified memory structure provides a significant advantage over traditional architectures by drastically reducing latency and increasing bandwidth.
In the M5 model, unified memory bandwidth has increased by 28% (up to 153 GB/s), and standard configurations will reach customers with 16 GB of RAM.
One of the most anticipated changes
– an increase in standard storage capacity and technological upgrade.
- Base Capacity: The new M5 MacBook Air comes standard with a 512 GB fast solid-state drive (SSD), replacing the previously used 256 GB standard.
- Speed: The next-generation SSDs ensure up to 2 times greater read and write speeds.
- Maximum Configuration: Users working with large files or videos can now configure the device with up to 4 TB of storage.
While the computer’s exterior and color palette remain identical to the previous model,
Apple has updated the connectivity modules by implementing a dedicated Apple N1 wireless chip.
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| Display | 13.6 or 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display (500 nits brightness) |
| Connectivity | Apple N1 chip supporting Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 |
| Camera | 12 MP Center Stage camera for high-definition video calls |
| Battery | Up to 18 hours of battery life |
Due to the increased base 512 GB SSD capacity and 16 GB unified memory,
the initial price of the device has increased, but considering the amount of memory provided, it has become even more competitive. The M4 model previously cost $999 (for 256 GB), and to get the 512 GB version, one had to pay $1,199. The new model with 512 GB immediately offers a better price-to-quality ratio.
- The 13-inch M5 MacBook Air starts at $1,099.
- The 15-inch version starts at $1,299.
Pre-orders officially began on March 4, 2026, and the laptops will reach customers and store shelves on March 11.
